having trouble sleeping?

January 21, 2007

I have some issues with insomnia caused by a small case of stress and anxiety. I have some sleeping aids that I only use on a must need occasion which is usually to combat jetlag or get through a long plane ride.

However I have discovered some alternative methods to battling insomnia. Herbs!

Passionflower
Passionflower is a woody vine native to North America. American Indians used the herb as a mild sedative. It has been used in traditional medicine for anxiety, insomnia, restlessness and any conditions with possible emotional or psychological origins.

Generally, passionflower is considered safe when used as a flavoring or taken within recommended amounts. In Europe, it’s combined with other herbs as an over the counter sedative. (quoted from the Mayo Clinic Guide to Alternative Medicine)

Next time your at Loblaws pick up some President’s Choice Dreamland Tea which has passionflower in it. A cup of Dreamland tea puts me to sleep at night I find.

Valerian
Valerian is a flowering grassland plant that has long been used as a tranquilizer and to treat insomnia, anxiety and stress. Products such as teas are made from the active ingredient.
